We bring together the best technical and creative expertise to design, configure, launch and measure the ongoing success of every finely tailored digital learning solution.
Remote-Learner operates as an entirely distributed company, with team members hired for their expertise, not their proximity to an office. While there are many benefits to remote work, from reduced costs to the decreased (or nonexistent) commute time, decreased carbon footprint and greater access to talent, we are often asked how we stay so connected. It involves a commitment to communication and actively connecting with one another at every opportunity.
Here are just a few ways we make it work for us.
Twice a month, we meet as a full organization for virtual All Hands meetings to celebrate successes, keep everyone connected to the business, and get up to date on new releases. In 2016 we held our first ever company-wide in-person meeting. Part social, part team meetings, and 100% about connecting the team, this three day event was a hit.
Our weekly newsletter is a collaborative effort with all employees and teams contributing every week since 2013. Each week our CEO posts an update to the staff, often giving special recognition to employees for work accomplished during the week. Department updates, new product information, webinar schedule, software releases, HR news, upcoming company events, and celebrations of employee anniversaries are included.
Slack, Zoom and Other Tools for Connecting
Staying connected on the day to day is always a challenge, especially in a fully distributed organization. Tools like Google Apps, Slack, Zoom, Jira, Confluence wiki, and Salesforce all come together to provide a wealth of shared information and collaboration. All of our meetings are video meetings so that we can see each other in action. And our Slack implementation includes department- and topic-specific channels, as well as social channels to keep people connecting for fun.
Connecting at Conferences
Conferences are a great way to connect with clients, partners, and one another. Work, fun, and learning all come together at these events attended by R-Lers from throughout the company. Whether presenting, networking, manning a booth, or attending sessions, everyone comes back inspired to make an impact.
It’s not always about work! Whenever possible, our employees get together just for fun. Because there are a number of employees living in the Toronto and Denver areas, these folks get together for fun family gatherings, cookouts, “just for the heck of it” parties, and holiday celebrations. Whenever employees are traveling to cities where other employees live, we encourage them to connect while in town.
Health and Wellness are a priority at Remote-Learner. Weekly fitness challenges that encourage healthy lifestyle habits and build camaraderie across the organization are posted in our company newsletter and in our dedicated Wellness Slack channel. Healthy recipes and wellness-related articles are also shared amongst staff members.
We practice what we preach! One thing we all have in common is a love of learning. We deploy internally the same solutions we provide our clients. We use our DLE to provide our team with opportunities to learn about our solutions, best practices in learning and training, and the opportunity to connect with teammates who each have their own passions and areas of expertise. Some would say “We eat our own dog food” but we prefer “Drink our own wine!”
