Meet the Team: Karen Lee

At Remote Learner, our greatest strength is our staff. We have a diverse group of employees around the United States and Canada, individuals with the unique backgrounds and skills needed to meet the challenges faced by our clients. Over the next few months, we’ll be profiling some of the staff members that make the Remote Learner team strong. This week we talked to Karen Lee, HR Director for Remote Learner.

Brief: Karen Lee is Remote Learner’s HR Director. Karen lives in Virginia with her husband. She has three children and two grandchildren. Karen, who celebrates her 11th year with Remote Learner this month, is an avid kickboxer. She also sings and plays the djembe drum with her church praise and worship group.

Q: Thanks for talking with us today, Karen! Let’s get started by finding out a little bit about you. For example, is it true you’re really into kickboxing?

A:   A few years ago, my son and husband and I stopped by the local frozen yogurt shop. Next door was this fitness place I’d not seen before. I went and picked up one of the brochures about a cool kickboxing fitness gym called 9Round Fitness. My son said, “Oh Mom, you can’t do that!” And what I heard was “Challenge!”  I went and did my free week and have never stopped.

Q: Can you tell us about the community fundraising you’ve done through your gym, as part of Remote Learner’s RL Giving Program?

A: The gym has an event every year called Kickin’ for a Cure to raise money for breast cancer research. The gym donates one penny for every kick you do in your workout. I have some friends who have beat breast cancer as well as some friends who haven’t survived it, so it’s really important to me to take part in that event. Each year I’ve gotten in a few more kicks than before. Last time I did it I had 2,020 kicks in 30 minutes!

(Editor’s note: That works out to 1.1 kicks per second!)

Q: Tell us a little about your career path and how it lead to Remote Learner.

A:  I went to college and studied Psychology, graduating with a BS Degree from James Madison University here in Virginia. After, college I was thankfully able to be a “stay at home” Mom for several years. Then I began working at a dermatology practice. I started out doing filing and ended up becoming the business/insurance manager for the practice.

When I started with Remote Learner in 2007, there were just seven of us. I was a bit of a “jack of all trades,” handling customer resource management, human resources and finances. Due to significant company growth, about two years ago the Finance and HR departments were divided and I was privileged to be given the job of HR Director.

Q: What gets you excited about working here?

A:  I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve ever done with Remote Learner. I love wearing multiple hats. I’ve loved working in finance and I absolutely love working in HR. People are my thing.

Q: From your perspective, why should someone choose Remote Learner as their online learning solution provider?

A: We really care about solving problems for our customers. We encourage Support to call our customers. So often you can get a problem solved by talking through it because you’re going to hear a lot more of the details and you can ask questions and get full understanding. Our strength is also in our internal collaboration and support for each other. We use that to create solutions for customers and give them something really amazing.
